The deceased in this instance was a husband and wife couple who had come to Colombo from Matale aged 28 and 25 years to reside in Colombo. Neighbours had divulged when inquiring information about the couple that the two of them were constantly engaged in conflicts and that the husband had abandoned a previous marriage and subsequently got married to the deceased female and then given birth to a child an year back. The husband was someone who had been engaged in labour-work while the wife had remained at home looking after their offspring. Though conflicts of the couple which took place quite frequently had often been settled by the police, the neighbours had further mentioned that there was no end to their quarrels.
On the day of the incident the deceased husband had dragged the wife towards the Kelani river lying close to their house and had pushed her down and after a short while had jumped into the river himself. In that instance the child had been on a bed in a room in their house. As a result of this incident both husband and wife had drowned while the innocent 1 year old baby was left isolated. After the incident was brought to the notice of courts, the child was directed to a children's home, the police reported.
