Domestic aide of Rajagiriya professor ... robs 25 lakhs!
An incident where everybody's attention came to be focused on the risk attached to thefts carried out by those who come to engage in domestic duties was revealed by Welikada Police some days ago.
Police have managed to unravel information that a female domestic aide who had been visiting the home of an Indian Professor and his Sri Lankan wife in the morning and leaving in the evening for a period of 4 years had during that period been stealing valuable articles in
the house on and off and that the total value of the items so taken is estimated over 25 lakhs. Inmates of this house had not an inkling of an idea that the domestic aide who had won their trust and affection was in fact the culprit in this instance until the police exposed it to the couple.
The closest incident that gave rise to this theft was the case of the wedding ring and gold necklace of the professor's wife going missing. She had of course searched every nook and corner of the house for those missing articles and after her search proved futile had finally made a complaint to Welikada Police. As such the police had visited the house concerned and on inspecting it had found that there were no clues to say that a thief had entered the house and further that there were no opportunities where a thief could gain entry to the house.
Later when the police questioned them as to whether they entertained any suspicion about the house-aide, what they had told was that they had the least suspicion about her and had even asked the police not to inquire about this matter from her because it would place her in an embarassing position. Whatever it is, the police had made a sharp observation on her and interrogated her for a long period and thus subsequently had been successful in extracting all information relating to each and every robbery she had been involved in this house. Having heard about this the couple had ultimately faced a situation where they were stupefied, it is reported. The woman had confessed that as a matter of habit she had taken away something of value each day when she had been leaving this house in the evening after work. This woman who had thus robbed numerous articles including gold jewellery to the tune of almost 25 lakhs had afterwards pawned them at several pawn broker shops at Wellawatta, it was revealed. The woman who was taken into custody by Welikada Police day-before-yesterday (05) in fact is a married woman from Kirullapona area.
The police were able to find that the woman suspect who had worked in the said house only from morning till evening had for a period of close upon 4 years had during her period of service robbed items such as gold jewellery, wrist watches, mobile phones and other articles in the house, running into close upon 25 lakhs and had later sold them at various locations. She is expected to be produced before courts.
