President does not accept Dilrukshi's resignation --- Told to await Prime Minister's arrival

Using the speech made at a meeting by President Maithripala Sirisena recently at the Foundation Institute as the background, Director General of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption has tendered her resignation to President's Secretariat on Monday the 17th. On that occasion as the President was away on a tour in India the Secretary to the President who accepted her

letter had made her understand that it would be forwarded to the President. Though she has to engage in her duties until her resignation is accepted, she was present at her office; however her letter was not responded to in any manner even after the President returned to the island. In the meantime, the President who had gone through her letter had put it aside until the Prime Minister would return from Belgium, with the intention of coming to a decision whether to accept her letter or not as, reported today 19th. Under these circumstances Mrs. Dilrukshi is yet engaged in her duties. Mrs. Dilrukshi has arrived at this strong decision after the President had said that the FCID, CID and Bribery Commission have done certain things without his knowledge and that the work is being carried out according to a political agenda instead.

Whatever it is, after her resignation various people have made various comments. What Mr. Nishantha Shri Warnasingha said yesterday was that her resignation was put forward not particularly because of the President's speech itself; but because after matters relating to the COPE Report in connection with the Central Bank treasury would be exposed and she would then have to mediate in that respect and so she wants to free herself from that issue. In the process what Udaya Gamanpila of the United Opposition and Musammil of Jathika Nidahas Peramuna said was that her resignation would contribute towards the welfare of the commissions. The two of them further commented asking the Inspector General of Police too to resign if possible because his name also has been linked to the FCID and the CID. In the process what Minister Patali Champika said was that those who occupy these seats are not relevant and that if they find it an arduous job ... it is not a problem if they hand it over to those who can handle it.

Whatever it is, a number of incidents including the bribery and corruption which was involved in the detection of the 'Massive Customs fraud' some time back took place during the administration period of Mrs. Dilrukshi. But she was subject to censure by some others for having involved MPs and Ministers of the last regime continuously for interrogation. The President had decided to come into a conclusion regarding her decision once the Premier returns to the island.
