Estate economy on the downward trend--Rs 1000./- wage per day cannot be acceded to-Labour Minister
The other day in Colombo and in several outstations there were some clamours in order to increase the daily wage of estate workers to be increased to rupees one thousand per day. This was as the cost of living has risen and the
workers cannot make ends meet.
They have called in this connection to accede to the election promise made.In this regard the Minister of Labour WJ Seneviratne had this to say:
" Certainttrade unions have promised to increase the daily wage up to Rs 1000/- during the past general election. We are concerned and aware of it.That is not a promise made from looking at all angles. The workers are now clamouring for this Rs 1000/ per day increase. This is not a increase promised taking responsibility.
Today the estate economy is at such a state with the economy on a downward trend.I believe that all workers agree and understand with this statement.Only the daily wage of Rs 730/- is what we could agree to."
