The death of the First Year student of the Moratuwa University whose dead body was found inside a room in a private hostel where university students used to lodge in Katubedda area in Moratuwa yesterday remains still
indefinite as to whether it was a case of suicide or a murder.
There had been 4 others living in 3 rooms with the deceased student for a monthly rent engaging in educational activities and another student had been staying in the rom where the deceased student had been staying. Day-before-yesterday morning though the students had left at various times for morning lectures only the deceased student was left isolated in the room. When the rest of the colleagues had come to the hostel after lectures in the evening, they had told the police that what they found was that the room was locked from inside and that a mumbling sound was heard from inside. They had also told police that they then took action to break open the door. As such, they said that when the friends said that after opening the door they had found the dead student in a pool of blood murmuring inside the room. They had promptly taken action to admit him to hospital but he had been dead even on admission. hospital sources reported. According to the Judicial Medical Officer there were several cut marks inflicted from a scissor at two locations on the student's neck in addition to damage seen on the abdomen region done with a sharp blade. The Judicial Medical Officer finally returned a verdict that this death was caused from an internal haemmorage that has occured from the cuts.
The deceased in this instance a student of the First Year of the Information Technology Faculty of the University of Moratuwa named Nivantha Dinesh aged 23 years. He was a resident of 4th milepost, China Harbour, Trincomalee. He was supposed to be someone of a silent character and someone who had spent his time in a solitary manner.
Mrs. Karunawathie residing in Rikillagaskada, Kandy who is a relative mother (Loku amma) of the student had said that the student was a person who was a silent character devoted to acts of merit and that it is unbelievable that he had died like this by committing suicide. She had further mentioned that he had visited her two days before this and that as far as she knows he had no problem at the campus or personal problem as such. Whatever it is, she has said that on one of his visits he had spoken about some problems connected to ragging only. She has added that he has said, "the students are queer ... they're scolding a lot .... harassing .... can't wait" on the first occasion and that he had wanted to keep away from the campus but that she and others had coerced him and sent him to the campus. She had finally told police that the act of suicide is not credible and that there is suspicion over the death. Police investigations are underway to determine whether the reason for this death is compunction which resulted in suicide or a murder.
