Invitation for drama artistes to enquire into cultural life meets with negative response
Drama artistes staged a funny protest recently at the State Drama Festival during the presentation of awards for the artistes for the reason of having held it in a manner where they were degraded. Among the boards of protest displayed were
slogans such as the following:
'President ... are you aware that there is something called a cultural life also?'.
The attention of the President was brought to the notice of this incident and a special discussion was scheduled to be held between the President Mr. Maithripala Sirisena and a group of young drama artistes today (07) in connection with the protest launched which surfaced at the State Drama Festival. It was initially reported that this discussion was to take place at the Presidential Secretariat this afternoon and that artistes such as K.B. Herath, Saumya Liyanage, Jagath Manuwarana, Namal Jayasingha and Chamara Guruge were to attend the discussion. Whatever it is, the invitation extended by the President in connection with the stepmotherly treatment extended for the Drama Festival was rejected by the President of the Ancillary Board of Drama K.B. Herath.
Though an announcement was issued by the Presidential Secretariat for a discussion with the President, it was informed in turn of a decision that a solution could not be arrived at by involving drama artistes in a matter that deals with a topic that should be resolved by officers and politicians.
