Sri Lanka to begin importation of Quadricycles as alternative to three-wheelers

What the Minister of Finance Ravi Karunanayaka mentioned at a media briefing held day-before-yesterday was that the price-hike of three-wheelers were effected on a request made by three-wheeler associations and that there is an excess of three-wheelers in the country than is
necessary. At the same time he further said that for the purpose of competing with these three-wheelers a new type of four-wheeler has been introduced into the country at a lower cost. However he did not disclose its name. Even in Nepal close to India three-wheelers have been totally abolished and instead Maruti cars have been introduced as taxis. 

In future, three-wheelers would be obsolete and to take its place a new type of small four-wheeler would be introduced, it is reported. According to information we received, this vehicle is not classified under cars. It in fact is known as Quadricycle. This new type of vehicle is in fact fitted with an engine to an old rickshaw and thus being modified in that manner. Further this vehicle had been in useage for quite sometime. When During the period when Nano of the Tata Company started to become popular, in order to compete with that vehicle the Bajaj Company in India introduced the four-wheel vehicle known as Bajaj Cryat in 2013 and thus subsequently it was named as a Quadricycle type. It is reported that its production price is approximately American $2500 (three and a half lakhs rupees). Its sale price is supposed to increase with taxes added. 

Already some of these vehicles have been brought down to Sri Lanka and would be introduced in the near future after a quality control process, it was reported. The Bajaj Cryat vehicle which could travel at a maximum speed of 90 kms possesses a 200 c.c. engine. It could travel 30 kms with 1 litre of petrol. The weight is 400 kg. It does not have the capacity to load passengers as much as a three-wheel could and other than the driver in front 3 passengers could be accommodated in this case.
