As the Veterinary surgeon had gone abroad the Baby elephant fallen into Hambantota culvert dies sans treatment
A three month old Baby Elephant had been rescued when fallen into an unprotected culvert that had been created during the second phase of the Hambantota harbour development. Very unfortunately the Baby Elephant had succumbed to the injuries as the Veterinary Surgeon in the area had gone
abroad on leave.
On the 29th of May tho Baby Elephant had been rescued by the wild life officers with the assistance of the harbour workers .The Baby Elephant had been taken on the 17th June to the Udawalawe “interim elephant sevana” for treatment in the absence of the Veterinary Surgeon who had taken leave to proceed abroad. Unfortunately the Veterinary Surgeon who was to be assigned in his place had been assigned to another area.
Hence it has been reported that there had been no Veterinary Surgeon to treat the baby Elephant.
From the 17th June to 20th June while at the Udawalawe “Interim elephant sevana” although the baby Elephant had been treated the condition had become grave and then the Veterinary Surgeon from Embilipitiya had been summoned to treat. On the 21st instant as the baby Elephant had become weak owing to lack of proper treatment had succumbed to death.
It is reported that island wide there are only nine Veterinary Surgeons attached to the wild life department. This was disclosed very sympathetically by the related authorities after the death of the Baby Elephant.
