Water level in Kelani River has risen -- Update 2

As a result of the Kelani River overflowing, people in houses living around Kaduwela, Kotikawatta, Mulleriyawa, Wellampitiya, Meegoda, Kolonnawa, Sedawatta, Kohilawatta, Kittampahuwa, Wennawatta, Kuruniwatta, Lansiyawatta, Ambagaha Handiya and Meetotamulla areas have been rendered helpless without a
proper place to stay. Some have left their houses while some others had been remaining on the top floors or some elevated places hoping that the water would recede. However on the contrary the water level had begun to develop further and for the second day in succession about 200 people have been trapped in Kolonnawa without any help as such. These helpless people have pleaded from those whom they knew  from time to time to rescue them, but as there was no satisfactory assistance forthcoming, they have had to remain in hunger, it was reported.

In the process the Navy has made a plea from the public to vacate their place of residence without remaining there anymore no sooner they are asked to leave such risky places. The media spokesman for the Navy  Mr. Akram Alevi says that even after such an announcement, as there were many persons who have not heeded such advice the Navy are engaged in a great effort in rescuing  them.

In the meantime what the Meteorological Department say is that the depression which was in action in the Bay of Bengal has once again turned into a hurricane and is presently stationed 600 kilometers from Kankasanthurai area. As such it was also said that the risk of landslides further exists in a number of areas of Kandy, Ratnapura, Kurunegala, Kegalle, Matale and Kalutara. It was particularly mentioned to be cautious from hurricanes. It was stated in the announcement that heavy rain between 100 and 150 mm. could be anticipated around the island.
