On the 31st tomorrow, patients to suffer
The government medical officers Association has announced that tomorrow on the 31st the all government medical officers have decided to have a one day’s token strike.
This strike has been organised by the GMOA against the appointment of the list of doctors to fill the vacancies that existed in filling the medical officers for post mortem duties. According to the GMOA the list had been prepared by the Director
General of Health haphazardly.
The members of the GMOA who had accused the previous government having favoured persons connected to their family members in performing administrative functions. Similarly they have accused the Minister of health acting in a similar fashion. It is reported that his wife, son and other family members have been appointed to key positions in the health ministry and take decisions to their liking.
The Assistant Secretary of the GMOA Dr Naveen Soysa had said that if the government do not take any steps to withdraw the list of doctors appointed to perform post mortem duties they would resort to a strike from the 1st June on wards.
However considering the disaster situation the token strike would not be held in the National hospital, hospitals in Gampaha, Puttalam , Kegalle and Kilinochchi districts. It is also reported that doctors in the Lady Ridgeway Children’s hospital, Castle street hospital for women, De Soysa women’s hospital, Sirimavo Bandaranaike children’s hospital, Cancer hospital and at hospitals where there are special kidney clinics the doctors would not resort to strike.
