Two schoolgirls die in railway accident!

These days the younger generation is living a life bonded with their mobile phones and at times they tend to lose sight of the world outside beyond that.

Last night at approximately 7.30 two schoolgirls who tried to cross the railway track in Dehiwala were knocked down by a train and thus unfortunately succumbed to death. At the moment this tragic incident took place the two of them have had the earphones of their mobile phones connected to the ears and thus were deaf to external noises and had crossed the rail track oblivion to
the sound of the approaching train, those around the area had seen.

It was in a car that these two students had gone in the company of a group of friends to attend a birthday party of a younger sister of a school friend. The car in which they had been travelling was stopped near the marine drive road and they were on their way to the restaurant and they had to cross the railway track for that purpose. Before the other friends joined, these two had hastened towards the railway track while focusing attention to the conversation they were involved in over the mobile phone.

They were negligent enough to even notice a train which happened to be plying to Kalutara South from Maradana approaching in their direction and there was hardly any time to even beep the horn, witnesses to the accident had said. Most tragically the two schoolgirls who were thus knocked down by the train had got dragged along and had got run over while the train had then stopped and been reversed to inspect as to what really took place. It was seen that both girls had breathed their last on the spot because of the accident. Onlookers remarked that a male friend and some female friends had started wailing after seeing their dead bodies.

The two girls who were supposed to be studying at Holy Family Convent in their Advanced Level class had been identified as Imesha Yasara from Kelaniya and Sheron Svelin from Wellawatta and both were 18 years of age. The two dead bodies have been despatched to Kalubowila Hospital and further enquiries are being handled by Dehiwala Police.
