Three million house robbery in Divulapitiya
Two robbers who entered a two-storeyed house in Divulapitiya area in Gampaha where a British national and his Sri Lankan wife were living had gagged and tied up the husband and raped the wife had fled after looting assets to the tune of
31 lakhs, it is reported.
Two individuals who had arrived in the guise of visitors last Saturday night at a time when this couple was at home have been responsible for this crime. The British national aged 70 years had been an Engineer and is now retired. His Sri Lankan wife had been serving as a nurse in a hospital in Britain. The two of them had been living for a long period in that country and had later come to occupy a new residence in Divulapitiya, Gampaha and that had been just 8 months ago. On the day of the incident the husband had been watching television downstairs while the wife had been ironing some clothes upstairs, she had told the police. All of a sudden she had heard some commotion downstairs and when she went downstairs what met her eyes was that two unknown persons were in the process of harassing her husband. They had then aimed a knife at her and scared her, after which they had made her husband sit on a chair and had applied gum plasters to his legs, feet and mouth, she said. After threatening her asking as to where valuables were, she had proceeded to show them where those were. They then trying to loot the valuables had abruptly jumped on her and after raping her in the presence of the husband finally had beat a retreat, she told the police.
Among valuable items looted by the robbers were cash, gold items, wrist watches of the Rolex type, diamond necklaces and mobile phones. The total value of the robbed articles were in the range of about 31 lakhs, it has been estimated. Divulapitiya Police are conducting investigations with regard to the crime.
