The case in relation to the murder of Sri Lankan doctor-husband by his doctor-wife in Perth, Australia which incident created a sensation during the recent past is being heard these days once more. It was confirmed in this court case that Dr. Chamari Liyanage had taken steps to murder her husband Dr. Dinendra Athukorala while he was on his bed, by
dealing a blow with a hammer because she was of a high temper and unsound mind and also as a result of her husband's abnormal sexual behaviour. Chamari Liyanage has been sentenced to 4 years imprisonment in this connection. The courts has decided to consider facts based on factors such as good behaviour and other factors which influenced the nature of the crime and subsequently lessen her punishment thereby and finally grant her freedom in June.

 However, what the judge had said was that she would be expelled to Sri Lanka as soon as she is released from prison. Dr. Chamari's attorney-at-law George Guides has presented a volume of evidence in courts over this change of decision. He argues that Dr. Chamari totally declines leaving Australia to Sri Lanka, that she is a permanent resident in Australia for a period of over 5 years and that in order to preserve her social status and to live a life devoid of unnecessary pressure, she should remain in that country.

Dr. Chamari and Dr. Dinendra are parents of two children and they are presently in the custody of relatives. She has even gone to the extent of motivating her lawyer to sign a petition explaining facts to Courts as well as the Emigration and Immigration Department concerning her expulsion. Whatever it is, when outside persons who arrive in Australia happen to get involved in crimes and are found guilty, the courts have the authority to expel them according to the law of that country. The final judgment regarding Dr. Chamari would be pronounced at the next hearing.
