For Ayurvedic medicines cannabis is essential - remove ban
The commissioner of Ayurveda PSKR Weerakoon had emphasised the need of cannabis
in the manufacture of most ayurvedic medicines and since the growing of cannabis had been banned by the government the manufacture of Ayurveda medicines had been handicapped as it is vital for many Ayurveda medicine. The commissioner of Ayurveda has suggested to the government to allow legally the quantity of cannabis required for the manufacture ayurveda medicine be allowed to be grown.
It has been revealed by the commissioner PSKR Weerakoon that presently they obtain the requirement of cannabis from the production at courts from those who had been caught and produced for illegal growing of cannabis before they are confiscated.
The commissioner also had revealed that the cannabis so obtained from courts are not fresh and hence the needed essence is not received for the medicines thus manufactured. What they need are fresh cannabis leaves for the medicine manufactured.
In this context the approval form the Minister of health Dr Rajitha Senaratne has been obtained but as they lack legal provisions in this regard from the government for growing of cannabis the manufacture of quality ayurvedic medicines is still stalled.
