Several popular characters of Alliance National List ....

bids goodbye to politics

Only 5 out of 29 gets chance from list ....

because losers were included

Names of 12 MPs named from the National List as MPs of the United People's Freedom Alliance for
the General Election this time was forwarded to the Elections Commissioner last evening.

Already criticism by certain individuals has been aimed over this list. The democratic objective of selecting MPs from the National List is to provide access for scholars and those who possess the strategical capabilities considered as essential for the parliament but unable to engage in propaganda activities. However one angle of criticism is that those who have been rejected from this list at the General Elections being taken in through the National List is not democratic. But the response in this connection was that the preparation of this list was done with the knowledge of the Maithri faction and for the purpose of meting out justice to those of his supporters.

While the crowd who were labelled as being the group who shouted "Appachchi malo" by going behind Maithri to get Ministership by showing their back to Mahinda during the pre-election period were subjected to hooting at election stages, a propaganda campaign was launched as not to cast votes for them. For that very reason such action was taken to do justice to them. Whatever it is, justice has not been meted out to Nandimithra Ekanayaka and Piyasena Gamage. From among the 29 names listed in the National List forwarded to the Commissioner prior to the elections, many of those names have been withdrawn and only 5 names have been selected. Among those names so discarded there is a crowd of people who for a considerable period of time had been stalwarts holding posts of Minister in the Alliance. Among those are such names of Professor G.L. Peiris, D.E.W. Gunasekera, Professor Tissa Witharana, Reginold Cooray and Jeewan Cumaratunga. In the same way, even people like Tiran Alles, Tissa Atthanayaka and Professor Rajive Wijesingha who were at the receiving end are included among that list. Most of them would have to say goodbye to politics in future. Even Piyasiri Wijeynayaka, M.F.M. Musammil who were on the list of the supporting side of Wimal Weeravansha and those of minor Parties have not been afforded an opportunity in this case by Chairman Maithri.

The names of those selected have been forwarded by former General Secretary Susil Premajayantha. It had to be done by him because though the powers invested in the Secretary was changed over to Professor Vishwa Warnapala according to a court order, the Elections Commissioner accepts the names of the Secretary because it is his name that is responsible as having handed over such names.

Published below are names of those selected from the National List of the UPFA and the 29 individuals forwarded from the list to the Elections Commissioner.
