As no indications had been displayed properly on roads so far about speed limits, the police did not file cases for high-speeding. What was done in
the case of those who resorted to speeding was only that the drivers were warned. What influenced this was a legal case. It was a decision that prohibited the police in taking action because proper boards in this connection had not been displayed on the roads. The police now informs the public that this issue which according to Supreme Court Case No. 298 / 2005 has now been relaxed to some extent. As such, the police have announced the speed limits on several routes where police will be taking action on those who violate such rules from August 11th onwards. Under these circumstances a speed limit of a maximum of 50 k.p.h. has been confined to those driving within city limits in common and 70 k.p.h. in rural areas on routes mentioned. In detail, it is as follows.
01. The speed limit of city and rural areas would be 40 k.p.h. and 50 k.p.h. for property vehicles, motor tricycles, motor tricycle vans and special purpose vehicles such as containers.
02. A speed limit of 60 k.p.h. is enforced for rural areas only for motor coaches and all lorries and all other rural vehicles.

1. Peradeniya. From Peradeniya to Pussellawa on the Chenkalady route across Badulla.
2. Avissawella. From Dehiowita to Yatiyanthota on the Kandy route across Hatton.
3. Panadura. From Panadura to Ingiriya along the Ratnapura route across Nambapana.
4. From Habarana to Polonnaruwa along Thirukkondaiadumadu route across Habarana.
5. Maradankadawala. From Nochchiagama to Mihintale along the Trincomalee route across Puttalam.
6. Road leading to Anuradhapura along the Anuradhapura route across Galkulama.
7. Medawachchiya. From Murugan to Pesalai along the Talaimannar route across Mannar.
8. From Haputale to Hali Ela along the Hali Ela route across Beragala.
9. From Pelmadulla to Embilipitiya along the Nonagama route across Pelmadulla Embilipitiya.
