Minister during the past regime was found last evening at the former Minister's official residence down Malalasekera Mawatha, Colombo.
On inspecting the dead body found two or three days before which gave an impression that he had committed suicide, a vial of poison supposed to have been taken by him as well as a letter have been found. What was mentioned in the letter was a note written to his wife. According to that note it says that the former Minister had suspected him over the Madiwela house goingand up in flames on the 1st of August that it was he who was responsible for the damage and because he was heartbroken over it he had decided to take his life in this manner, not being able to bear it anymore.
The victim who had committed suicide this way is 50 year old Premasiri Suraweeraarachchi, a father of 3 living in Ridigama area. It was said that he had been the driver of the former Minister for some time. About 11 days before this a two-storeyed house belonging to the former Minister in Madiwela had gone up in flames and reduced to ashes. From that day onwards this driver had not come home and there had been no message from him either which situation made the driver's wife and a brother lodge a complaint with the police. Whatever it is, the former Minister had not made any comment about this disappearance.
The brother who was searching for some information had received a clue day-before-yesterday that this driver was staying at former Minister's official residence along Malalsekera Mawatha. As such he had complained about it to Kurunduwatta Police yesterday after which the police arrived there and after breaking opening the gate had found the dead body when inspecting the house. Even when the dead body was so found, the driver had already been dead two or three days, it was understood. No information could be found as to whether there was anybody else in the official residence.
Was the driver stuck inside this house from the day he was missing? If he died because he was thoroughly heartbroken, were there reasons for him to drink poison by notifying it by letter without employing any other method? Was the former Minister aware that the driver was in the house? These issues still remain a mystery. Whether this was a case of murder or really a case of suicide would be solved from the autopsy. Further examinations are underway.
