Security issue on President's school visit

GUN WITH BULLETS IN POSSESSION OF GAMPAHA BANDARANAIKE COLLEGE STUDENT WHO TRIED TO WELCOME PRESIDENT!

Security operations had been changed after the sensational incident that happened in Angunukolapelessa before this concerning the security of President Maithripala Sirisena.

However, another issue had arisen yesterday about protection on the occasion of the prize-giving ceremony held at Gampaha Bandaranaike College.

When the President arrived there yesterday a special welcome ceremony was arranged for him by student-cadets of the school while the security personnel who had arrived in advance on checking their weapons minus bullets one by one were able to find a weapon with a bullet in it. Immediately the said weapon had been confiscated and after taking it into custody the guards concerned had taken steps to hand it over to Gampaha Police Headquarters.

On inquiries carried out about this weapon it was revealed that weapons are not made use of by cadets of the school as a custom and on special occasions such as this the student-cadets of the school are informed after which these weapons are brought. As such, at the request of the Principal of Gampaha Bandaranaike College the cadets had supplied those weapons for this special event where the President attended. Though those should have been provided minus the bullets investigations are in progress to ascertain whether one bullet had been so made available in this case according to a purpose of a sabotage.  Even if a weapon with one bullet inside it was supplied by mistake, a question has arisen about the dangerous situation where those are being kept available for the use of the students concerned. 

A spokesman had mentioned that the school cannot be held responsible in relation to this incident. Whatever it is, the school cadet team is to be questioned regarding this incident, today.
