MAHINDA HEADS STATUS OF 'ELECTION OPERATIONS HEAD' ....

AS LEADER OF UNOFFICIAL GROUP

Mr. Dinesh Goonewardena says that former President Mr.Mahinda Rajapaksa has been appointed as

Chairman of Elections Directions Committee of the United People's Freedom Alliance.

He said that this decision was taken at the Elections Directions Committee held with participation of leaders of the Alliance, at SLFP Headquarters. He also added that the decision was obtained with the consent of everybody. He then said that the masses will decide as to who the leader would be. Whatever it is, the idea that the term 'leader of the group' would not be used was expressed at the meeting. It was later reported that after President Maithripala Sirisena, Chairman of United People's Freedom Alliance had expressed that he was not to extend support to Mahinda and that he would not be made Prime Minister this decision was arrived at after assembling yesterday; but it was not announced that President Maithripala's consent was obtained or whether he was even queried about it as the leader of the Alliance. On this occasion what former Minister Welgama had remarked was that President Maithripala Sirisena was a god's blessing for the Alliance and that because of that speech, those who were divided in the SLFP had got together. It was reported that it was a special feature to note that on this occasion seniors of the Alliance had kept silent about the critical situation that is currently brewing.
