Tragedy of Colombo-family who went to sea coast ....

wife and three kids carried away .... husband rescued

A tragedy where 4 members of one and the same family who had gone to wade the waters of the sea shore is reported from Hambanthota sea shore. The wife and three children died as a result, leaving the husband behind.

The family concerned had gone to Hambanthota last Friday night to attend the wedding at a house of a relative. Early in the morning of Saturday they had walked towards the sea waves opposite that house to wade on the rolling waves at which moment one child had been carried away by the waves. The mother who had tried to rescue that child too had been carried away by the waves. At this point the father too had then made an attempt to rescue the two of them and the other two children who were with him had followed him. On that occasion the two children not being familiar by the sight of the two adults in a confused mood had tried to get hold of the two of them; ultimately all five had being carried away by the current of the waves when a certain person nearby on hearing their shouts had seen what was taking place and had jumped into the sea and managed to rescue the husband who was drowning. At that moment the wife and the children were not in sight. The husband who was in a serious condition was given first aid and later admitted to Hambanthota Hospital with the aid of the people in the area.

Though the dead bodies of the wife and two sons had been brought ashore, the body of the 6 year old daughter has still not been recovered. Though the fishing folk in the area and the divers had launched a rescue operation throughout yesterday (25), because of the rough condition of the sea they had abandoned their efforts. The dead bodies are kept at the mortuary of the Hambanthota Hospital.

The deceased are Fathima Thisara (31), Mohammed Zaib (10) the son, Mohammed Shaik the 2 year old son and Fathima Zigra the 6 year old daughter, all of the same family. Saruk Mohammed Sabrudeen, the father had thus saved his life from this tragedy.

The police said that this accident has happened because of having gone to wade on the sea shore at an unprotected area and cautioned people coming from outside areas to take precautionary measures when attempting something like this. Inquiries into these deaths are being conducted today.
