It has been estimated by now that the number who had died from the earthquake that took place from the Western

This earthquake which was recorded at a magnitude of Richter 7.8 and 15 kilometres deep claimed lives mostly because it happened close to a mountainous strip of land. The earthquake occured about 21 kilometres away from the Nepalese capital of Kathmandu in the area known as Pokhara at 11.56 Nepalese time last morning. Roofs of houses and buildings coming down, mountains cascading and landslides with trees, rocks toppling simultaneously were recorded with the earthquake. As a result, lives were lost most unfortunately. An eye-witness said that a 14 storeyed building was reduced to rubbles within a split second. The Kathmandu Airport too suffered damages. Not only Nepal but even Bihar Pradesh of India in close proximity and the province of Western Bengal too were subjected to damage. It was also reported that 40 school-children had sustained injuries and the railway tunnel transport system in India also has been affected. China, Bangladesh and Bhutan too has received repercussions of the quake.
Since Nepal which suffered results of the most serious damage was situated in the area close to where Mount Everest stood, the lives of a number of foreign tourists who had come to scale the mountain too were lost and several people have disappeared. By now it has been confirmed that about 17 individuals have died on Mount Everest itself because of the earthquake. In the process, an executive officer of the Google Company who had come to scale the mountains too was among those who died in this process, the Company confirmed.
The number of Nepalese nationals who had lost their lives by 12 this afternoon was estimated at 1910. The number of Indians are 53 and the number of Chinese were 17 while Bangladesh nationals are said to be 4. Mr. W.M. Seneviratna, the Ambassador of Sri Lanka in Nepal said that the Sri Lankans there had faced no danger. About 120 Sri Lankan students are following studies in Nepal; but had faced no danger either. The Sri Lankan crowd who are stationed in Kathmandu City in Nepal these days for the South Asian Under 14 Balika Football Tournament is out of danger.The Lumbini Maha Bodhi Temple where Lord Buddha was born does not belong to this area concerned.
Several countries in the world have come forward to render assistance and aid in connection with this catastrophe. The C-130 plane of the Air Force had been dispatched to Nepal carrying a Sri Lankan team of doctors and the Air Force Spokesman mentioned that two more flights accompanying rescue operators are expected to leave from here.
It is said that this happens to be the worst earthquake that struck Nepal after 81 years. The worst earthquake that was recorded in 1934 was the Nepal-Bihar Earthquake where 1900 lives were lost in India and Nepal in that severe earth tremor.
