Lakhanda abandoned because of political reasons ....

to be relaunched with fresh outlook

Some unrest has been created among employees of Lakhanda Radio Channel belonging to the State that
it is to be closed down. Employees say that for some weeks Lakhanda employees are being rested at home while non-stop CDs are being relayed instead over the channel.

What actually has taken place is that Lakhanda which is running at a loss an is engaged in an experimental transmission which has been broadcast with the hope of relaunching it with a fresh outlook. In this connection Lakhanda Chairman Ganganath Dissanayaka mentions that the former regime has brought Lakhanda to a bankrupt state and this situation has surfaced as a result of that.

This channel which has recruited employees more than double that is necessary because of political reasons, the surplus number of employees has brought about a fall in its quality and even maintenance expenditure itself could not be met and as a result every month a sum of Rs. 90 lakhs had to be pocketed out to continue the service. All these expenses have been met by Independent Television which is an affiliated institution of Lakhanda. Having taken a decision not to spend on Lakhanda anymore, steps have been taken to relaunch this with a new facelift and 6 months have been allowed to bring it to a profit-making level.

It is also understood that the channel might be relaunched and broadcast in future with a new name other than Lakhanda.
