Restriction imposed by Mahinda in 2010, out ....
Permission from President Maithripala ..
to sing National Anthem in Tamil too
There were no issues in relation to the singing of the National Anthem in both Sinhala and Tamil
from the year 1951 to 2010. However, after the war was won in 2009 the Mahinda Rajapaksa regime, singing it in Tamil was stopped by them on the understanding that it should be sung only in the Sinhala language. This change was effected after a cabinet paper was forwarded in 2010 and because of a request by the Jathika Nidahas Peramuna and the Hela Urumaya at that time.
Whatever it is, what President Maithripala Sirisena replying to a question asked by Mr. Mano Ganeshan at the administrative committee meeting which was held yesterday (17) was that singing the National Anthem in Tamil according to his belief, is no problem. He further mentioned that he would even grant constitutional rights for the National Anthem to be sung in Tamil.
Though there is no change in the contents even if its is sung in Tamil language, an opportunity has been provided for the words used by scholar Ananda Samarakoon those days about the pride of Sri Lanka to be sung in the same way in a more intense manner in their own language.
In this manner not only one song as such in certain countries around the world, but several national songs have been created in each language and among such countries are South Africa, Ireland, Cameroons,Canada, New Zealand and Switzerland.
Seen below is a video recording of an audio of the Sri Lanka National Anthem sung in Tamil language.
