Former Elections Commissioner Chandrananda De Silva is no more

The former elections commissioner Chandrananda de Silva has passed away in the

wee hours today (21st).At the time of his demise he was 78 years old.

He had excelled as the elections commissioner from the year 1982 upto 1995 during the regimes of J.R.Jayewardene and Ranasinghe Premadasa.He was burdened with the correct implementation of the new preferential voting system introduced by the 1978 J.R Jayawardena's  new constitutional reforms.As the elections commissiner then, Chandrananda de Silva had two tasks tp perform,one of them was to introduce the new preferential voting system to the country and to educate  the voters on this new electoral system of voting.Both tasks were implemented by him successfully.

It was during his long tenure of service as the elections commissioner that Sri Lanka had most number of elections which he was responsible to have them concluded successfully.After his long tenure as the elections commissioner he served as the defense secretary in the Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga government.
