Ulapane pregnant mother thrown from bus delivers baby

28 year old pregnant mother who was seriously injured after having got thrown off while travelling on the footboard in a bus plying from Kandy-Hatton
last Thursday having not been given a seat was expected to deliver the baby in 15 days; but according to instructions of doctors the baby was delivered through a Ceasarean operation last Saturday, it was learned. The baby was delivered in Kandy Hospital and hospital sources say that the baby is in a healthy condition. K. Chandralatha, this 28 year old mother had to face this unfortunate accident because she was not offered a seat by anybody in this bus which was crowded.

Chandralatha who received serious injuries when the bus took a bend in Ulapane area in Gampola was thrown out after which she was admitted to Gampola Teaching Hospital. She was later transferred to Kandy Hospital as she needed further treatment. This mishap occured when Chandralatha, a resident of Ulapane Mahawilawatta had been on her way to a medical clinic conducted at Nawalapitiya and she had been in the company of her mother when she was in this bus when the accident took place. At the time of the accident she was expected to deliver the baby in another 15 days' time and it was said that after attending the clinic she was to get admitted to the hospital. The conductor and the driver had not seen her being thrown out when the bus which was travelling at a terrific speed had taken a bend in the same speed when Chandralatha who had been standing near the door had got thrown out of the said bus. Because of shouts of the passengers, the bus had come to a stop and steps were taken to save pregnant Chandralatha. It was after that people in the neighbourhood had stopped a motor vehicle travelling on the road and managed to transport her to Gampola Hospital. When officers of Gampola Traffic Division arrived at the place concerned and began inquiries, only the driver had been there and the conductor had later surrendered to the police. Both of them were taken into custody and produced before Gampola Magistrate Courts and later ordered to be remanded.
