Mysterious incidents taking place at dawn during release of Presidential results!
During the time when results of the Presidential Election was being broadcast on the dawn of last 9th it has been reported that a network of secret incidents
related to the former President had occured from various corners. Some of the reports are contradictory to each other.
At media discussions where Patali Champika and Mangala Samaraweera attached at present to the present government have to a certain extent divulged about this and at a media briefing held by JVP today (12) this topic had been a point of discussion. When the 3rd term of rule had to be abandoned by Mahinda contrary to his wishes where he had forcibly tried to acquire power and it has been the chief point of the dialogue that surfaced.
Though by early dawn on 9th Friday one or two results were made known to the masses, a detailed description of all this came into the ears of the President and it was across the Election Results Supervision Office installed at Temple Trees. They had informed him that he was on the losing side. What followed after that is still a mystery. News that came streaming in from various corners is known only to a handful.
The Maithree segment has pointed out that there is also a suspicion that Mahinda had obtained legal counselling as to whether it was possible that he could stay in power further as President by stopping the election results after pointing out a shortcoming in relation to election results; thus extending his strong arm of his Executive powers.
What Mangala says is that Mahinda has summoned the IGP and chiefs of the 3 Forces with the presence of the Attorney-General too and whether they could co-operate with him for him to extend his period for a further 2 years. For this purpose it has also come to be known that an attempt had been taken to deploy army officers at points where election results were being counted.
It is mentioned by Mangala that IGP N.K. Ilangakoon and Army Commander Daya Ratnayaka had spoken against this proposition and that if the President does not bow down to the decision of the public, they had said that it could result in severe bloodshed.
Rajitha however has spoken about this incident in a somewhat different tone. It is that though a group of army officers partial to Mahinda had agreed to launch a coup to maintain Mahinda in power; but it had to be abandoned with army chiefs stepping against it.
What Champika says was that a horrendous crime was averted in the nick of time.
These stories are not clear if considered separately. However there are hints that some incident has definitely taken place. Only a few people know about it. It is not known as to what will be revealed about it. But it is informed that Mangala, Champika and Anura Kumara are expected to spill out the truth about this as early as possible.
After being confirmed about the defeat Mahinda had phoned Ranil around 4.30 in the morning and on that occasion Ranil had said that it is required that he come to Temple Trees and discuss about it. Rajitha and Rathana Thero had opposed him going there. But Ranil had proceeded.
The Opposition leader who entered Temple trees early that morning observed that Attorney-General Mohan Peiris was present with President Mahinda there, it is understood.
President's Secretary Lalith Weeratunge and Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksha too were there. On that occasion talks rested on a peaceful transfer of power.
Ranil assured that the protection afforded to Mahinda and Gotabhaya would be maintained right along and then Mahinda had asked whether he could use as his official residence Aukland House, a tourist holiday resort of the government near Jaik Hilton Hotel.
Mahinda had also told Ranil that he, members of his family or his brother Gotabhaya be not harmed by Sarath Fonseka. Ranil had assured that such a thought need not worry him.
When Ranil was just about to leave he had received a phone call from Maithree and Ranil had handed over the phone to Mahinda allowing the two of them to converse with each other. During the conversation that ensued Maithree had given a reply about the Aukland House official residence which Mahinda had requested for. He had said that as that premises has been arranged for other activities, another bungalow within limits of Colombo could be provided.
After Ranil had gone, towards early that morning Mahinda had gone to the Presidential Secretariat and after having met the parliamentarians had bid goodbye to his position and then subsequently proceeded on a helicopter, on a chopper from Temple Trees to Medamulana.
Though Ranil or Maithree were well aware of what transpired the previous night, none of the two had discussed about it.
If according to results there had been an incident of acquiring power forcibly, it is then imperative that an inquiry be carried out regarding the Presidential Election of 2010 once again because similar stories circulated around that election too.
