Udaya Gammanpillai at Temple Trees for 4 hours on 9th morning .... reveals everything
"I can't remember whether Chief Justice was present"
According to the complaint made by Minister
Mangala Samarawera that an attempt of conspiracy was launched to keep President Mahinda in power for the balance two years pretending that the election results were corrupted in the process when the Mahinda Rajapaksha regime was collapsing and according to the results of the Presidential election last January 9th , an interrogation is being carried out on those suspected of such a conspiracy as having been present at Temple Trees. Among those named as having been there on that occasion, Provincial Council member Daya Gammanpillai is mentioned. He had visited the CID yesterday and after making a revelation about this had revealed the media about what he had told the BBC.
"I was at Temple Trees from 2.30 to about 6.30 in the morning on January 9th. I haven't gone to wish President Mahinda when he won in 2005 and 2010. But when the final result was being announced at Royal College on the night of 8th, I came to know that he was losing at about 2 on 9th morning. So I went to see.
At that moment, Secretary of Defence, leaders of the three forces and Mr. Mahinda Balasuriya were there at Temple Trees. If the Opposition behaves violently when the government was losing, it would result in severe chaos and destruction. In the same way there was suspicion that great harm would occur during the time that Pope's visit was scheduled. It was the idea of most of those there that a curfew be announced. But the President rejected that opinion for fear that by doing so the Opposition would get a wrong idea. At that point the IGP was given instructions, 'I am a President who's going home now.... so, get advice from the new Prime Minister and President and do what is right".
(On that occasion, why was Chief Justice Mohan Peris there .... what had he got to do there?).
"I don't know whether he was there. There were two or three hundred assembled there. To say who and who were there.... I can't remember. It was a confused situation .... the election had been lost. I can't say whether he was there .... I didn't see".
(When you were there .... did the former President get a call from American Secretary of State John Kerry?)
"I have no idea about it. I was not with the President right along. The allegation is that Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksha wanted to stay in power right along by an Army conspiracy on 9th dawn and that I was a participant to it. The public is aware as to what sort of a character I am. I am not a type of person who would attack anyone even with a catapult.
The humorous part of this is that Mr.G.L. Peiris and Mr. Gotabhaya have been associated in this. At the same time, the Foreign Minister says that this coup was halted because the Attorney-General showed his protest in this regard. If that is so .... is it by taking instructions from the Attorney-General that this military conspiracy was to be launched? That sort of thing would be happening for the first time in the world then".
