A pregnant school-teacher who was ready to get into a bus met with a most unfortunate death as a result of a bus-container accident which occured this morning around 6.35 at Hungama.
Padmini Shiromala, a 29 year old teacher of Vijitha Maha Vidyalaya of Dikwella was the victim and she was newly-wedded and her wedding ceremony had taken place just 3 months before. Padmini Shiromala living in Katuwana had been married to a school-teacher and it is learned that at the time of the fateful incident, she had been pregnant.
She had been ready to get into a bus when she faced this tragic incident. The container concerned had all of a sudden approached in the direction of the bus and on noticing an accident which was about to happen, the bus driver had tooted the horn.
Having heard the horn-sound the driver of the container had once more swerved the container towards the middle of the road and because of the rapid speed it had come, he had not been able to control the speed and ultimately ended up by knocking down this school-teacher also colliding with the rear part of the bus in the process.
On this occasion even the door of the bus had got dragged out. Eye-witnesses say that with the container striking the body of the teacher, she had got thrown away a distance of about 50 metres and had died on the spot.
This incident was reported around 6.45 early this morning (03) in Lunama, Kivula area along Colombo -- Kataragama main road. Because of this incident two other persons too have been admitted to hospital.
It is suspected that this accident may have happened because the driver of the container had fallen asleep. Because of this accident there had been a delay of about 02 hours' traffic in Kivula area along Colombo - Kataragama route.
After this tragic accident the husband of the deceased teacher had been wailing, hugging her dead body and it is understood that the whole area were shocked under the circumstances.
Hungama Police are conducting further inquiries over the incident.
