Sri Lanka were subjected to an astounding defeat at the hands of India yesterday by leaving room for a single batsman to amass a huge score of 264 in the history of ODIs.
The record was established by India's opening batsman Rohith Sharma. The Indian team had totalled 404 runs for 5 wickets at the end of the 50 overs and the Sri Lankan team who pursued that total was bowled out for 251 runs at the end of 43.1 runs.
Rohith Sharma who arrived at the crease after India won the toss as the opening batsman, when dismissed in the last ball of the innings, was the highest scorer having scored 264 runs in just 173 balls with 33 fours and 9 sixes.
Eden Garden which celebrated 150 years yesterday saw Rohith Sharma coming into the records which incidentally was something special.
Vivendra Sewag scored 219 in a one-day match in the year 2011 against the West Indies and Sharma prior to this on November 2nd in 2013 scored 209 against Australia and yesterday he happened to be the only batsman to score two double centuries in one day games. The fact that Rohith Sharma scored the highest number of boundaries of 33 fours to his personal credit was something that drew extra attention.
It was also notable that India had gone beyond the 400 mark 5 times in one-day games in this tournament.
In the first over of Shaminda Eranga which was the 5th over of the innings Sharma who had then scored only 4 runs offered a catch which was unfortunately dropped and which actually paid dividends to Rohith Sharma's progress thereafter to end up with a majestic score, clouting 33 fours and 9 sixes.
Sharma was involved in a dynamic partnership of 202 for the 3rd wicket with Captain Virat Koli when Koli was run out for 66. Sharma who then carried on a partnership of 128 with Robin Utthajaya got out in the final ball to Kulasekera edging a catch to Mahela Jayawardena.
Replying to India's total the Sri Lankan total could not even go beyond Rohith Sharma's one-handed innings of 264.
