While Hirunika who claimed the highest Preferential Votes at the last Provincial Council Elections from Colombo and later has joined Maithreepala, Gammanpila who came second has now joined the Mahinda faction.


It was Minister Wimal Weeravansha who escorted him in the car to the meeting held at the SLFP headquarters. On this occasion what Udaya Gammanpila said was that he came to this decision because his heart told him so. This is how he spoke about it:
                                                           "I took the decision with pain. I chose my motherland and my conscience instead of JHU. My conscience told me to take this decision. In the future I would be informing about this in writing to Patali Champika and Omalpe Sobhitha Thero. I am now independent.

When giving my support to Maithree I followed a silent opinion. There was a problem with the Party supporters about my silence. But without stating my opinion, I stayed together as a Party. However I had to arrive at this decision in favour of my conscience".
