who had robbed from Aravinda's safe!
The robber who entered cricketer Mr. Aravinda de Silva's house in Colombo Thurstan Road about 2 months ago was arrested today by the police.
This robber who is a drug-addict was a resident of 60 Wattha, Kurunduwatta, Colombo. He had from time to time come to Colombo Fort to change the foreign cash notes and had come for the purpose today also; but having seen a police officer had got startled and beat a retreat when he was taken into custody. interrogating him, he had admitted having robbed money in Mr. Aravinda de Silva's safe inclusive of several other incidents of robbery, police sources say.
Whatever it is, the police have not revealed how this drug-addict had turned the CCTV camera in Aravinda's room in another direction or how he had come to know of the secret password.
Mr. Aravinda de Silva and his wife had been on a visit to England on a holiday when a large number of local as well as foreign currency in the safe of the house had been robbed and the value of the monies so robbed amounts to about 50 lakhs, it is understood.
Though Colpetty Police commenced investigations after coming to know that the said monies have vanished, until they came across this drug-addict they were unable to track any suspected person in this connection. The secret number used for the safe was known to Mr. Aravinda de Silva, his wife and mother only. It was revealed at the investigations that the robber had used that secret number to open the safe.
It was also said that at the time the robbery took place, there had been 8 servants in the house. Investigations are still underway to ascertain whether the robber who was arrested had been assisted by these servants.
