Sarath Fonseka defranchised

Fonseka's name scrapped off .... from Elections Nomination list

The Attorney-general last evening issued instructions to the Elections Commissioner to remove the name of Mr. Sarath Fonseka, the leader of the Democratic Party from the Elections Nomination list.
The aforementioned request had been made earlier by the Elections Commissioner from the Attorney-general to explain about the problematic situation that had cropped up whether Mr. Sarath Fonseka has voting powers since he has exercised his voting rights at the last Provincial Council elections after his civil rights was taken off.

After an inquiry made by the Attorney-general's Department, the above-mentioned decision had been notified yesterday. As such, the name of Mr. Sarath Fonseka would be removed from the 2014 Election Nominations list. His name had been registered at the voting electorate of Kesbewa.

About removing the name of Mr. Sarath Fonseka, the Elections Commissioner is expected to make an announcement on an official level in the presence of Party Secretaries.

A problematic situation has emerged as to whether Mr. Sarath Fonseka is able to contest as a candidate at the forthcoming elections under these circumstances.
