Failed train-track suicide attempt in Ahangama

Woman moves away from rail-track
Man stretches right across rail-track

Couple who tried suicide .... escapes death
Assault from passengers!
An incident of the behaviour of a couple in love who had thought of committing suicide by jumping in front of a moving train escaping death was reported from Ahangama yesterday.

The two of them who are a mother of one child and a father of three children are employed as labourers at the provincial council of Weligama. An illicit affair had been going on between the two of them and though they had tried to unite, there had no opportunity for it. As such, there was no permission and alternative where society was concerned and families as well, both of them had thought of jumping in front of a train.

As such, the two of them who were supposed to have been crying somewhere close to the railway station in Ahangama last morning had gone towards the railway-track on seeing Galu Kumari train with the purpose of committing suicide. Though the two of them had been together until the said train drew nigh, the female had suddenly developed a desire to survive further and had moved away from the track. However, the male did not, and what he did was stretch himself on the very centre of the railway-track.

Though the train driver noticed that some person was trying to jump in front of the train, he was not in a position to stop the train abruptly and therefore the train had gone over this person and only then was the driver able to apply brakes of the train.

Subsequently the passengers in the train had immediately got down from the train to check whether the man had faced any mishap; but surprisingly he had sustained only a few bruises and nothing else. Since he was right in the middle, the train had travelled over his body. In this instance, the female who moved away was seen sobbing on a side.

As the two of them had created a risk, the passengers had scolded them and a crowd of people who got hold of the man had assaulted him. On this occasion a provincial council member of Weligama who travelled in the same train had settled the issue and had taken steps to hand the couple over to the
police.

After they were warned by the police, the couple had been admitted to hospital and had left the hospital after being treated for the bruises.
