Lady doctor dies during beautification -- Updates 3

Calls given to police by those who went for treatment from doctor .... Dr. Priyangi died because of an expired anti-biotic

It is reported that those who had paid money in advance to Dr. Nimal Gamage to reserve an appointment at this unsafe beauty surgery in Bambalapitiya have now become utterly helpless.
Some parties have phoned the police and asked how they could get back the Rs. 10,000 which they had paid in advance to reserve a date. When some
persons had come to know that they are not able to recover the money, it is reported that have become seriously worried.

Whatever it is, the police say that courts would be kept informed in future about this issue. Police sources say that as popular actors-actresses and politicians have made payments to the said doctor and secured dates in advance, they have not made inquiries even by word and had thus avoided the situation for the sake of shame.

Whatever it is, the police anticipate that in the recent future, further information would emerge once statements would be secured from Dr. Nimal Gamage.

Colombo Additional Magistrate,Mr. A.M. Sahabdeen ordered yesterday (18) that Dr. Nimal Gamage be kept in remand custody until next 25th. The Magistrate also issued orders in this manner after considering a request by the Colombo CID who are conducting inquiries to detain the suspect-doctor as investigations connected to the incident are still underway. When the prosecution was called before courts, the suspect-doctor was produced by prison officers, further reports were filed by the Colombo CID.

The Asst.Superintendent of Police, Mr. Jayaratna of the Colombo CID presented evidence relating to this incident further yesterday (18) that all medicines available at this clinic were found expired and that there was no treatment of a basic nature in case an emergency had occured there.

The ASP who presented evidence to courts said, "My Lord .... so far government analyst reports, medical reports as well as any reports pertaining to this place have still not been received .... the investigations too have not been completed. 4 females have been employed at this place as workers. They have not been trained to provide services in the capacity of nurses. They have not passed the O/Ls in the least. They are not suitable enough to dispense treatment. This place had no facilities sufficient enough to provide First Aid in case of an emergency. There's no ambulance .... no oxygen. There was no First Aid Box in the least. When somebody's life happens to be at risk, there's nothing here. What was here were medicines that had expired. In short .... the victim had been administered an anti-biotic which had already expired. The date of manufacture, date of expiry, country of manufacture .... nothing is indicated. The medicines were found inside bags. At present, this place is sealed. This incident has created an uproar among doctors as something which degrades the medical profession. They have been preparing to stage a strike. If that takes place, what happens is that the helpless patients would fall into inconvenience. Therefore, we are against the suspect being granted bail".

Dr. Wasantha Pitigala who appeared in courts on behalf of he lady-doctor (Dr. Mrs. Pelpolagoda Aluthge Priyangi of Lady Ridgeway Children's Hospital) made the following comments: "My Lord .... whoever goes to a doctor is a patient. If a request by a patient is carried out .... the doctor has done something neglectful. This doctor is not a surgeon. On the other hand, if an emergency situation arises .... the patient has to come down 6 floors. There's no trolley here .... no oxygen .... in the least, there's nothing. The nurses can't control this situation. I request Your Honour that her monies be handed over to her husband".

IP Mr. Vajira Dhanapala of Bambalapitiya Police: "My Lord .... in the case of plastic surgery, there should be an anasthesist .... there should be oxygen facilities. The closest treatment is administering oxygen. This has been done with the least possible safety. This suspect has carried on plastic surgery at this place without any permission. There's no facility here to attend to surgical matters. If this lady doctor has been dispatched to some hospital or another within half-hour, her life could be saved. This lady has gone to this place at 1.30 in the afternoon. It was at 1.40 that the injection had been given. She had a tussle between life and death for quite some time. Her death was notified to police at 3.00 o'clock. In the process, no action has been taken to save her life. The plaintiff had come in a car. This doctor may have had a car .... no necessity for an ambulance as such. Even if a three-wheeler going on the road was stopped by just putting out the hand, it could have been stopped and the patient taken to hospital. They had done nothing. If they had taken an iota of consideration, this patient could have been saved".

Mr. Shanaka Ranasinghe, President's Counsel who appeared in courts on behalf of the suspect said,"My Lord .... my client is a doctor. He has even received a certificate from the USA (hands over certificate to courts)".

Magistrate: "This certificate is an ordinary training certificate. He is a normal doctor ...not a surgeon. Two of the conditions in this certificate have been violated by this person. This person has no permission to engage in surgery. At the same time,in the case of an emergency, treatment should be given. He has violated both".

Mr. Shanaka Ranasinghe, P.C. "My Lord ... he has violated both conditions. But it is no objection to grant him bail. According to what the police say, this person has acted in a most careless manner. It is not a reason to refuse bail. It is government pharmaceutical specialists who check whether the medicine has expired. My client has already become isolated from the entire group of medical practitioners".

Magistrate (questions police): "What is the reason for doctors to stage a strike?"

Police: "There is a possibility that a public uproar could develop .... if this suspect is bailed out.The other point is, the expired medicine. Still even investigations are not over. There could be some influence created on the investigations. In the same way, this is a case of maintaining an illegal surgery".

Magistrate: "If the suspect is remanded ... will those mistakes decrease?"

Police: "No My Lord. But this suspect has been remanded over this incident for 4 days. Still a date even has not been fixed for post-mortem evidence".

Magistrate: "Does this person's wife still living in this building?"

Police: "Yes My Lord .... because of that, some influence could affect the evidence".

The Magistrate who took the information presented into consideration ordered that a report on the expired medicines and a report about the suspect-doctor be forwarded to courts by next 25th and ordered that the suspect-doctor be kept in remand until that date. The police were issued orders by courts to call for post-mortem evidence in relation to this incident once more on next 22nd.

Information was provided by Mr. Ajith Mettananda, SI of the Crime Division including several other officers on behalf of Bambalapitiya Police, by appearing in courts.
