Death sentence on Ukrainian couple ....who murdered a child and servant woman in Rajagiriya

In the month of February, 2010 four years ago, a 6 year old Ukrainian child and a Sri Lankan lady who was engaged to look after the child was stabbed to death while the mother of the child, a Ukrainian national as well was stabbed and fatally wounded and the husband and wife duo, the assailants in this case were subjected to punishment at the gallows yesterday by High Court.

The lady who had been serving in the capacity of a maid-servant who died in the incident had expressed her protest over an illegal activity in which the accused couple had been involved in. She had been a resident of Ja Ela area and on the day of the incident she had expressed her opposition to the illegal activity in which they had been indulging in and the accused couple had been brutal enough to stab this servant woman and the child who was in her care.

Though the mother of the deceased child too faced stab injuries, the assailants had not been successful in killing the child; she had only faced injury. It was learned later that the accused couple had carried a revengeful attitude towards the injured mother Victoria.

The convicted in this instance were the Ukrainian couple Mayur Eugene and Yana Brishiana who were imposed the death sentence.

According to a question posed as to whether there is anything to say prior to the death sentence being pronounced, the second accused who was in the dock addressing court said that if death sentence is passed asked that the punishment be carried out at that very moment and to shoot her down instantly.

The Bench of Judges who passed the death sentence on the accused on being convicted of murder,ordered that for having aided and abetted in the murder, the convicted be sentenced to 15 years rigorous imprisonment and asked that in addition a fine of Rs. 5 lakhs be imposed on them and if the fine and compensation were not paid, in lieu of same, an additional jail term of 12 months be imposed. 

Action was filed against the accused for having murdered Sen Kim and Daisy Nona on 23rd February, 2010 or a date in proximity and for having aided and abetted and conspired for that purpose. Attorneys-at-Law who appeared on behalf of the accused said that their clients were an innocent party over allegations raised against them and whatever it is, an appeal would be filed with the Supreme Court against the verdict of the High Court.
