Principal who instructed to give 'toku' to student .... in custody
An incident where classmates of a 10 year old female student studying in the scholarship class were asked to give 'toku' (knocks on the head) by the Principal as a punishment because she had failed to come on time when instructed to come early to school to clean the classroom, is reported from Polonnaruwa.
As a result of the abnormal knocks on the head, she had suffered from dizziness, headache and a vomitish tendency and was finally admitted to Diyabeduma District Hospital that same evening and later transferred to Polonnaruwa General Hospital.
After the parents of the girl had complained to the police about the incident, the police had taken steps to arrest the Principal.
This female student who was the victim of being given knocks on the head was Tharushi Sithmini Sandanayaka studying in grade 5 of Diyabeduma Namal Wewa Primary School. Tharushi and 3 other girls were assigned the task of cleaning the classroom day-before-yesterday morning and because this task was delayed, the Principal who came there then brought the girl concerned before the girls who were to sweep the classroom and had asked them to give knocks on her head. There had been both girls and boys as it was a mixed school.
"The girls didn't give knocks on the head. About 10 boys have been struggling to give those knocks on her head. She came home in the evening crying, saying that her head was aching. When asked for the reason, she explained everything. My child then started vomitting. She was to sit for the scholarship exam in August. Because of a faintish and dizzy nature, a complaint was lodged at Diyabeduma Police and she was admitted to hospital. Now my daughter says that she can't go to school. The exam is also close at hand. We are making preparations to admit our other child also to this school next year. We suspect that they would take revenge on our children also," Tharushi's mother said about this.
While the girl who became the target of knocks on the head is in shock; almost all the boys in the class who gave knocks on her head testified that they had done so under the instructions of this Principal.
Bakamuna Police has informed that the suspect Principal Mr. Udathennegedera Premaratna had been taken into custody.
