Mother clubbed to death for refusing to `have an illicit affair

Mother of 2 children in neighbouring house clubbed to death ....for refusing illicit affair

An incident is reported where a former army soldier in the neighbouring vicinity had assaulted and murdered a mother of 2 children in Mirissa area, Weligama last morning after having been outraged because she had not given her consent for an illicit relationship. The murderer too had committed suicide by hanging himself.

When the deceased mother had been carrying her two and a half year old child in her arms last morning and had been on her way to drop the other elder child to daham pasela the former army soldier had committed the murder after which he had gone home and hanged himself.

The deceased in the incident are a mother of 2 children, aged 35 years named Rohini Kanthi Wimalagunasekera and Asanka Sanath, a former army soldier and bachelor aged 39 years.

This former army soldier who committed the murder had been living in a nearby house with his parents. For quite sometime he had been making advances at her by inviting her to have an illicit relationship with him. The deceased mother who no could no longer bear this pressure had complained to Weligama Police together with her husband, after which the soldier was taken into custody and produced in courts and remanded for a period of 14 days.

Having been released on bail he had begun to threaten her life and she had once again complained to Weligama Police about it. Though the police had gone on two days to the suspect's house to inquire about the complaint, he had not been in the house, according to a high police officer. But what relations of the deceased say is that the police have not taken proper action on the second complaint, which has resulted in this tragedy.

Last morning when the murder took place, the husband of the deceased had gone to work in the hotel where he was employed. Subsequently his wife had carried the small child and was walking a distance about 50 metres from her home accompanying her elder child to the daham pasela when  the assailant had approached her from behind and dealt a blow on her, the police suspect.

Police have taken steps to record a statement from the 9 year old child who was being escorted to daham pasela. The Crime bureau of Matara Police Division are conducting further inquiries on the incident.
