Allowing Thalangama couple die .... remanded!
A number of lives were lost as a result of the torrential rain that the whole country experienced in the past few days and in the process a tragedy was reported from Thalangama area with two more deaths being added to that list. It was an incident where an old couple died being covered by a massive wall. The said 20 feet wall had been erected in a risky manner along Dharmashoka Mawatha, Pothuarawa in Thalangama by a practicing doctor close to his house.
He is Dr. Nalaka Sudarshana Guneratna serving at Lady Ridgeway Children's Hospital. The said couple who were sleeping in a room in the house nearby thus died as a result of the accident. The doctor under consideration has already taken into custody in connection with this issue related to the wall which had been built in an unsafe manner and was produced before courts yesterday; but was refused bail.
The deceased couple are Premasiri Navaratna (72) and Premaseeli (62). One of their children had lived with a family in another part of the same house while another child had lived closeby with the family.
This house had been erected by the doctor on a high land and the massive wall had been constructed in graphite at a high elevation.
On the night of the 2nd of this month the wall referred to had collapsed on the roof of the room where the age-old couple were sleeping during the course of the rain. Subsequent to which, the roof ad walls had crumpled down. Due to the accident, the couple breathed their last on the spot. Though neighbours had earlier pointed out the potential danger of the wall at the time it was being built, the doctor had ignored their words, as reported. Relatives of the deceased mentioned that the police who conducted the investigations into the deaths of the two elders had not given the impression that it was a fault of the doctor concerned and they had not even been interested in questioning this doctor.
While matters were forwarded to courts yesterday that the graphite wall of the two-storied house belonging to the doctor was constructed without proper standard, Kaduwela Addl. Magistrate ordered that the doctor be produced in courts once more today (5) to inquire further into the matter. The doctor was not given bail yesterday.
