Magistrate chides Police on use of 'Minimum Force'

Minimum police force does not mean .... hitting eyes to pop out-- Magistrate warns

The 13 Samasaukya students who were taken into custody recently in Slave Island were released on bail yesterday in courts. Fort Magistrate Mr. Thilina Gamage gave a thorough warning to police saying, "Does exercising minimum force mean hitting a student for his eyes to pop out? Police should know that it is not what is known as minimum force".
What the police said was that they got hold of the students by using minimum force because the students obstructed their duties.

However, the police acted in a brutal manner and after assaulting them, they had jailed the students.

4 students who were allegedly assaulted by the police were undergoing treatment at the hospital and to grant bail the Magistrate has gone to the hospital to examine the condition of the students.

When the police had gone to arrest a Samasaukya student saying that he had obstructed their duties, 13 Samasaukya students had been taken into custody and remanded and Fort Magistrate Mr. Thilina Gamage yesterday ordered that the 13 students be released on a bail of Rs. 2 lakhs.
