Kidnapping incident at Wayamba University Freshers' night

 

Outsiders who came to Wayamba campus party ....
had tried to 'lift' girls

An unknown group of outsiders had attended a party held at Wayamba University at the Agriculture Faculty in Makandura, Pannala, Kuliyapitiya last 12th of March to welcome freshers in which case there had been a commotion.


Some young boys who gave an expression that they were University students by joining the occasion had attempted to dupe and abduct female freshers. On later investigations it was found that they had entered the University premises in 2 motor vehicles. Since it was a party held on behalf of freshers, organisers of the get together were unable to distinguish whether they were actually freshers or outsiders.

In the process these outsiders had even participated in dancing events in the party and had even danced together with the girls holding their hands. Subsequently it was reported that this unknown gang of youth had made an effort to get into their vehicles in dim light with these girls who had been dancing with them when the time was around 2 in the morning.

It was at that moment that the girls had become somewhat surprised as to who these boys were who were trying to whisk them away unanticipatedly. It was then because of their shouts that the senior students who organized the party promptly arrived on the scene. When these abductors realized that things were going wrong for them, they had engaged in a tussel with the senior students and after having dropped the idea of kidnapping the girls had ultimately ended up in fisticuffs with the senior students. Knowing that there was no salvation for them, they had finally bolted in their vehicles in which they had come.

On this occasion, the senior students were unable to stop their retreat while the security personnel too were not in a position to take action in this connection.Suspicion had grown that this gang of boys had been given some co-operation by the security to gain entry to the premises in their vehicles; but no active effort had been taken by the security force to prevent them fleeing from the scene either.

It was after that that the campus students took steps to notify the police about the incident.

According to police investigations, there is suspicion that the security force had given an indirect support to these outsiders. The senior students point out that a serious problem has cropped up in relation to the safety of the University girl students.

The police are conducting further inquiries into the matter.
