Principal had shown 'abnormal' attention on Wenusha!
According to investigations conducted by the National Child Protection Authority in relation to deceased Wenusha's incident of suicide which occured as a result of a Facebook issue, more fresh information has been unravelled in relation to the Principal who had wielded his administration which was similar to that of an army ruler. The new information also contains information about Wenusha's incident of suicide.
The story of Wenusha's mental stress and providing her with counselling service which was told to the media for the salvation of the army has now been exposed as a coined-up story.
It is already reported that the Principal had shown an abnormal manner of vigilance over Wenusha. It is also reported that when Wenusha's mother had gone to the school after the incident where Wenusha was reprimanded in public with a wrong opinion as having gone to see a film for the first time with her lover, the mother had wanted to explain matters and on the contrary she has been sent away.
Though several parties had tried to protect Principal Saman Indraratna; according to statements received by a large number of students and teachers as well in the school, the National Child Protection Authority say that a number of factors have been observed to the effect that the Principal is responsible in this connection.
Though there had been several complaints against this Principal on a number of occasions, the duty which Kurunegala police could not so far carry out, the NCPA has been able to put into action amid confusion that arose in the process. According to inquiries conducted so far, the main reason for Wenusha to put an end to her life has been the Principal's act of publicly slandering her in unpardonable words. It has already been revealed with ample testimony that the Principal had used such abusive language not once or twice, but in a number of instances as confirmed in the investigations. It is a special feature that the majority of those who provided evidence were students of Sir John Kotelawala Vidyalaya itself. From inquiries launched by NCPA upto now, what has come to light is that the Principal has been keeping a special eye on Wenusha. Why this Principal has been so vigilant about her in a school which had about 5,000 students is an issue by itself. Is it because she was a popular figure in the school ... or because she was a young girl who was the cynosure of everybody's eyes? The Principal once is supposed to have shouted at Wenusha at the morning assembly by bringing her on stage in the presence of about 5,000 students accusing her of going to see a film the previous day with boys. The fact that it was not a case of scolding for purposes of advising her but a case of scolding her in abusive language has already been confirmed by these investigations carried out by NCPA. The manner in which the Principal reprimanded Wenusha has been testified by a number of students of the school to the NCPA. It was the previous day that Wenusha had gone to see a film as is understood that the Principal had made use of abusive language to scold her in the presence of almost 5,000 students. As such, itis clear that the Principal had been keeping a watchful eye on her. though he had reprimanded her saying that she had gone to see a film with boys, it has been revealed that she had gone to see a film only in the company of her two sisters. Nothing is revealed to confirm that she had gone with a boy on that occasion and it has so far been confirmed by evidence received that they had gone to see the film in the evening only with the consent of her parents. Under these circumstances the NCPA suspect that the Principal has gone to the extent of shouting at her in bad language in front of the whole school without making any inquiries into the matter. Though Wenusha's mother had gone to the school the following day to explain that her daughter had gone to see a film only with the sisters, the Principal had reprimanded her too and had virtually chased her away, as is revealed.
This Principal who had been in Army service and later joined the Education Administrative Service had then joined Sir John Kotelawala Vidyalaya and then had taken steps to develop the school through material or physical resources, thus nurturing the school; the point that because of his aggressive administration the school itself has faced a number of several crises which is something the the NCPA has come to observe.
An incident where the Principal has beaten up a student with a cane and who had come to school wearing a pair of broken shoes by taking him to the disciplinary room and was advised not to come to school again without a new pair of shoes was a complaint that had been aimed at him. This is just one such example. A statement has been recorded from that student too.
According to what has been revealed from the investigations of the NCPA, Wenusha is a bright student who was a prefect in the school too as well as a talented dancer. It is she who acts for the teacher of dancing whenever she is absent and teaches dancing to her fellow students. So far no incident where she was involved in any anti-disciplinary activity within or outside the school has been detected by the NCPA.
There of course have been photos where Wenusha is seen in her school uniform in the company of another student together with a number of other photos which were found on the page of the Facebook which actually contributed towards her suicide. However, none of those photos were of an indecent nature. Whatever it is, the Principal who saw that particular photo had lost his temper and had promptly summoned Wenusha and the student who appeared in that photo, to his room. The message to get them down was done by announcing the names of both of them by loudspeaker. As such, when the two of them had turned up at the room of the Principal, he had spoken to Wenusha in a most debasing manner. It was during that time when a word which implies to females in the most obscene way was used on Wenusha.
Though the Principal had Wenusha in that manner, it was in reality the other student who was in the photo with her who had released it to the internet and not Wenusha at all. This photo concerned had been taken during the annual school picnic which happened to be Hakkgala Gardens and that was when the teachers too were around. This photo which was taken with a sense of friendship of class members had been inserted or tagged by the said boy on the Facebook but certainly not with any motive of causing any form of damage to Wenusha. Though the truth of this matter was explained to the Principal on that occasion he had not heeded what they said and had been aggressive to Wenusha asr revealed in the presence of the NCPA. The student concerned further testified that Wenusha had been reprimanded in indecent language and that she was identified her by using the most disgusting word on her. Not only this student, at the time the Principal was engaged in this act, some students who had been in front of the Principal's room had testified to what transpired in the room at that time.
The NCPA of course did not forget to look in to the family background of Wenusha. It was because she was supposed to have been directed to a Psychological Counsellor as as a result of family disputes which caused her to have mental collapse as reported from school quarters. When inquiring into this matter, it was found that there had been no family disputes to the extent that it had been portrayed. It is learnt that it was someone within the school without proper qualifications who had acted as Counsellor in this case who had expressed that Wenusha was suffering from mental stress. If it happened to be a competent Counsellor, what actually should have been done was direct her to a qualified Psychologist and not bark about it from place to place,according to the opinion of the NCPA. If someone at all has done something of that sort,it is a violation of ethics of the profession. As such, the attention of the NCPA has been drawn towards an inquiry as to whether the said Counsellor was someone who is endowed with proper qualifications to handle a case such as Wenusha's.
It is stated that steps had been taken by the Director of Education in the zone to issue a written communication in the month of July to the said Principal advising him to refrain from acting in a way so as not to cause any mental or physical harm to the students after the NCPA had received complaints about this Principal's harsh administration. Several letters which confirm it had been received had been notified to the NCPA. However, the NCPA has not been able to note that even after receiving the communication from the Director of Education of that zone, the Principal had taken no action to reform himself in this connection,as revealed on investigations carried out.
On inquiries and reports of witnesses which the NCPA had so far gathered, what can be observed is that the Principal is a character who has treated the students in the school in an aggressive manner. The NCPA finally say that it could be assumed that the attempt made by Wenusha to end her life was the influence of mental cruelty imposed on her.
