Schoolgirl suicides after Facebook photo issue --UPDATES 5

Parents should know to see to Wenusha
-Chief Minister Dayasiri
The Chief Minister of North-West Province Mr. Dayasiri Jayasekera who was present at a festival of Panduvasnuwara Maha Vidyalaya yesterday (Feb 13) said that parents of the student who committed suicide in a school in Kurunegala are totally responsible for that incident.
The Chief Minister who was away from the island when Wenusha committed suicide was able to call off the protest of fasting launched on behalf of Wenusha by her parents and some others on the evening of his return to the island. It was after a promise was made that an investigation would be conducted regarding this.

The Chief Minister had called for a report concerning this and the Principal concerned too had visited the Education office to submit his testimony.

Since the final report has still not been received, the final conclusion over the matter has yet not been given as to whether the Principal is to be removed from the school or not.

In the meantime, the Chief Minister has made his observances at the meeting held yesterday in this manner: "Children are in school for a short time .... most of the time they are with the parents. A young girl committed suicide recently. That was because the Principal is supposed to have scolded her. Simply because the Principal scolded her, this child has gone to the extent of taking her life because the parents  too are at fault. The parents are fully responsible for this child falling into this state of affairs. Mothers and fathers who have young children should check and see what their child is up to with the computer. To inquire and see in that manner is a responsibility of theirs. Before staging a protest once the child dies, everyone should take steps to avoid that child facing some tragedy.

According to information received, this is not an incident of just one day. In this case both the Principal and the child are to be blamed. The school where this incident took place is a popular school where about 4000 students study. A school of that calibre can't be allowed to be tarnished with a black mark. In the same way, I am conducting a fully-fledged investigation into the matter. I'll take a decision where a similar incident will not be repeated. I won't hesitate in meting out justice to the wrongdoer.
