Schoolgirl suicides after Facebook photo issue -- UPDATES 2

No school uniform for Kurunegala student's funeral
arricades at procession

The final rites of P.B. Venusha Imandi Bandara the student who was studying in grade 10 at Kurunegala Sir John Kotelawala mixed school who committed suicide by hanging herself with a sari, having been subjected to temper and aggressive remarks of the Principal because of a Facebook issue was conducted yesterday (Feb 7).

The road to the burial grounds where the final rites were to be conducted lay in front of the school where she was studying.
But it is understood that the police arrived at the scene and announced that the funeral procession was not permitted to proceed along that route and thus deviated the procession along a different route.
From the day the student's death occurred, the school-friends and colleagues as well as villagers were of the view that the Principal is responsible for the suicide and were in a rage. It is therefore assumed that this order was implemented on suspicion that damage would be caused to school buildings at the time the final rites were to be conducted.

Unfortunately the crowd had to take the dead body of Venusha Imandi along a different route to the cemetery instead of the original route they had planned.

P.P. Venusha Imandi at Thora Yaya, Dambulla road, was a student who was preparing to sit the GCE O/L exam this year. She was an attractive girl who was connected to various activities in school such as dancing and singing and was an outstanding student in her school.

Prior to committing suicide she had written a letter comprising 3 pages highlighting how the Principal had reprimanded her with harsh words, accusing her and she had further stated that she was putting an end to her life with the motive of teaching a lesson for no other to face such consequences in the future. In the evening, her body was taken to Malkaduwawa General Cemetery for the final rites in a manner that the funeral procession avoided the route where Sir John Kotelawala school where she had her education.

It is however reported as to who had made the request from the police for the funeral procession to deviate  from the route avoiding passing her school is not known. As an injunction order had been issued that students who represented the school  in the procession not to be dressed in the school uniform, it is reported that the friends of the deceased had gone there in a different attire.
