Mother dies .... as police assault son with club
On the night of February 20th, 3 police officers of Minuwangoda police had gone to a house in the area on an inquiry about a minor offence. They had been under liquor. On arrival at the said house they had brutally assaulted the suspect and when they were on the verge of arresting the suspect, the latter's mother had suddenly died as a result of the shock, it is reported.
The police having broken opened the door of the said house had entered forcibly and the suspect had been brutally assaulted with a wooden bar used on the door. On seeing this incident, the suspect's 50 year old mother had suffered a chest pain that moment and succumbed.
The police had invaded this house which was at Boragodawaththa, Minuwangoda around 2 o'clock in the morning, day-before-yesterday. Investigations reveal that the policemen had come there, being intoxicated with liquour and they had come to the house on a complaint made about a clash that had occured between two parties at Minuwangoda playground to arrest the suspect Ranil Prasad.
The said police officers had threatened inmates of the house saying that if the front door is not opened, they would open fire. Later they had kicked the back door and on entering the house from the rear they had brutally assaulted Ranil Prasad the younger son of the deceased Mrs. Wasantha Padmini who was sleeping closeby. They had beaten up the suspect in a most cruel manner with the said wooden bar as well as with shoes.
The mother who saw his son being beaten in this fashion began wailing and yelling, pleading them to spare the son, but to no avail. This mother who was thus confused over this unanticipated commotion which occured at midnight had then collapsed on the ground complaining of a chest pain, the daughter-in-law testified.
