A person in the area where the body was recovered had been going home across this stretch of fields on the morning of February 16th and had seen the corpse and and had phoned 119 Emergency, after which the investigations commenced. The police were able to find the motor bike on which the police officer had come, about 200 metres away from the spot where his body lay.
The bike stood close to an outlet selling pet fish and on the bike was found his black-coloured helmet, an English newspaper and 2 'bulathvita', according to police.
Mr. Samarakoon who served as the OIC of the Intelligence Unit of Mount Lavinia is a father of 2 children and is a resident of Jayamangalarama Road, Nugegoda. He has a son aged 18 years and a daughter of 17. It is learnt that both of them are studying at leading schools in Colombo.
Police Inspector Mr. Samarakoon had gone on his duties day-before-yesterday (Feb 15) at about 7 o'clock and had come home to fetch his daughter home from a tuition class. However, since he was intoxicated with liquor, as told to police, his wife had advised him not to escort the daughter. It was at that moment that he had set out on his fatal and last journey leaving home. Unfortunately however he had come to Dehiwala Police at about 6 p.m. and had taken a pistol with him and left, according to reports.
Mr. Samarakoon had got on to his motor bike and subsequently proceeded to Godagama area. His relatives say that he had no private or committment of any duties to come to Godagama.
The deceased who had parked the motor bike on the main road had then come along the route through which he could gain access to this stretch of lands on the night of February 15th had later committed suicide by shooting himself on the head, thus committing suicide, police suspect.
The dead body was found lying face downward while the pistol lay under his leg. Blank bullets were found lying close to the body and police said that these bullets were removed for future investigations. It was understood that there were another 13 bullets found inside the pistol.
He had worn a jacket and a further 4 packets of 'bulathvita' were found within 2 pockets in the jacket. As such, inclusive of the 2 'bulathvita' found earlier on the motor bike. he has had a total of 6 'bulathvita' in his possession. In the same way, a new restaurant had been incidentally opened on the 15th close to the place where the incident took place and people in the area say that there was a party at that place that night.
The police have uncovered a letter too inside Inspector Samarakoon's wallet. It however had no connection to this suicide and police say that it is a letter that was given to him by his wife in the year 2011. It was also understood that this letter of two pages contained information about conflicts between the deceased and his wife.
Though his wife was not present at the location where the incident took place, their 18 year old son, the daughter and relations were present to identify the corpse. The police said that a statement would be recorded to find out as to what conflict took place between the deceased police officer and his wife. The police also said that the son of the deceased was studying for the GCE A/L and that the daughter was studying for the GCE O/L.
The son of the deceased said that his father had been subjected to a medical examination last 13th and that the doctor had advised him to keep away from drinks. However, his father had not heeded this advice and that in the recent past had quarreled with his mother over this issue. He further mentioned that his father was addicted to alcohol and because his mother had objected to it he had been constantly at loggerheads with each other.
Mr. Milton Samarakoon was born on November 14th 1965 in Aranayaka and in the year 1989 he had joined the Police Department in the capacity of a recruit Sub-inspector. Mr. Samarakoon who served as an officer of the Intelligence Unit from 2005 was instrumental in supplying Intelligence information about LTTE activities. He has served at police stations such as Polonnaruwa, Hingurakgoda, Kirullapona, Dehiwala and Mount Lavinia.

Krishantha, OIC of Aturugiriya Police, Mr. Sanjeewa Mahanama, Mr. Lalith Wanniaarachchi, SI and OIC of its Crime Detection Unit Mr. Lalith Wanniaarachchi and a police team would be conducting future investigations in this connection.
Police Media Spokesman, Senior Police Superintendent said yesterday (Feb 16) that it had been revealed at preliminary investigations that the death of Mr. Samarakoon was a case of suicide.
Though massive propaganda has been launched by foreign media and certain local media by citing that this death is a case of murder and that through this an attempt had been made to conceal some information that this Intelligence Unit Officer had in his possession, the Police Spokesman denied all such reports.
