Dejected schoolboy hangs
himself with tie .....
because mother wanted friend sent home
An incident where a schoolboy of an O/L class had hanged himself within his room in his home for the reason of being dejected as his mother had refused his friend to put up the night in that house is reported from Kegalle. It is pathetic that an incident similar to that of Wenusha Imandi from Kurunegala which news created a great sensation in the country has been repeated just within a few days after that.
The deceased schoolboy is a 15 year old child named D.R. Isuru Lakshman Jayawickrema studying in grade 10 of Kegalle St.Mary's Maha Vidyalaya living in Bisowewa South in Galigamuwa town.
The father of the boy is engaged in trading activities not far away from the house. The deceased is the only boy in the family and has one elder sister.
It is reported that this boy had come home from school last 13th in the company of a friend. It is also understood that this friend of the deceased has on an earlier occasion too come to this house. The deceased had even given his clothes to his friend with the idea of making him stay back that day. However the boy's mother had objected to the friend putting up the night in the home. Later however she had offered lunch to her son and the latter's friend and had told the son not to provide lodging for him that day because the following day which was Poya was a day where he was to observe sil and therefore to send the friend home. The deceased had been dejected as he had to change the plans he had made because of his mother; but he had not gone into much of an argument with her and instead had done what he was told. Later he had put his friend into a bus and had returned home quite disappointed and the mother had noticed the son retiring into his room and going to sleep.
In the meantime she had chopped some firewood which was lying behind the house. After delivering the chopped firewood to the husband's shop and had returned home in about 10 or 15 minutes when she was shocked by what she saw.
The mother had seen the scene of her son hanging from a tie strapped round his neck from a beam on the roof of his room. Neighbours who heard the dead boy's mother wailing had rushed to the house and taken the boy to hospital; but even by that time he had breathed his last, it is reported.
A verdict of suicide was returned at the inquest and according to the evidence of the dead boy's mother, police suspect that the reason for committing suicide is the dejection he faced accompanied with sudden impulse.
