because of an anonymous call .... that her husband was having an illicit affair
There can be so many instances when there are moments when when a husband or a wife suspects each other. If such moments or are not settled or solved with a sense of intelligence, what could then transpire is a tragedy. A temporary suspicion or lack of trust can go far it could sometimes culminate in something like a loss of life.
Last week a coroner at the inquest into sudden deaths gave a verdict over the death of a mother of 3 children in the following manner:
"The responsibility over this unfortunate death should entirely be taken by the person who gave anonymous telephone calls. Don't think that there aren't people among us who can bear seeing somebody leading a life of happiness with sufficient means to eat and dress. We must live with some attention about such people. This innocent death is a case of such lack of understanding". This comment was made in relation to an incident which took place in such a background.
Hiramanagoda Kalpani (38), resident in Suriyapura, Kantalai died as a result of swallowing insecticide because of a telephone call which said that her husband was having a connection with another woman.
The deceased, the mother of 3 children was married to Herath Banda (42), a civil security guard. She had seriously suspected that her husband had got involved with another girl in the same village.
This suspicion had originated because of a telephone call from an unidentified caller. The caller had phoned her frequently in a manner that the suspicion would sink deeper into her mind. Herath Banda the husband of the deceased mother of 3 children gave evidence at the inquest into sudden deaths and had this to say:
"It's about 20 years since our marriage now. We have 3 children ... the eldest is 17 and the youngest is 3 1/2 years old. We were getting along quite well without any problem. It was during this time that she had received a phone call .... and that was from an unidentified caller. He had told my wife that I have a serious affair with a female and that it cannot be stopped. She had taken this seriously and we had a few quarrels of a mild manner at home. However much I told her that it was not true .... she refused to accept what I said.
On the day of this incident ..... when I was leaving home to work, I told her, "Keep this phone .... see for yourself whether I am getting calls on this phone". So saying I gave the phone to her. In the evening after coming home I asked her whether I got any calls ... and she replied in the negative and said that only a friend called. After that, when I was having a chat with the children in the verandah I saw her going towards the well at the back of the garden. After two or three minutes she came near me ... and started muttering 'Uh ... uh ... I swallowed poison ... I can't be cured .... look after the children well'. Then she passed away".
An innocent life was snatched away as a consequence of swallowing poison because of a disgusting act of an equally disgusting individual.
