Death of pre-school child
Drawing-pin stuck inside throat
An incident where a small child of an age attending pre-school was unfortunately killed in as a result of serious internal damage and injury caused by a drawing-pin getting stuck in the throat was reported last Friday (Dec 27) in Mihindupura area in Amparai.
The child had playfully thrown a drawing-pin into the mouth which then had got swallowed. The mother of the deceased child made her comments in this manner:
"After feeding the child that morning I brought out the clothes washed to put them out in the sun to dry. I put the clothes on the clothes-line and returned to the house. I then saw that something had got stuck in my
son's throat and was trying to remove it; putting his hand inside his mouth. Though nothing was seen from outside, I felt that something had got stuck in his throat ... but I didn't know what it was. So I immediately got down a three-wheeler and brought the child to Amparai hospital. By that time the child was unconscious. The doctors examined the child and said that the child was dead. Then in order to find out the cause of death, an x-ray was done. And then only we came to know that a nail had got stuck in the throat".
The deceased is a child of 4 years and 6 months named Herath Kankanamlage Kemith Dinsara, a resident of Mahindapura, Amparai who was attending a pre-school.
The mother of the child, Arosha Ramasundera and father Asitha Kumara Niranjan atr in tears because of this tragic ad unfortunate incident.
It was concluded at the post-mortem conducted over this incident that death was caused as a result of the breathing apparatus being blocked due to a drawing-pin getting stuck with its plastic part in the right-side lung.
