News of an Australian girl of 20 years raped on top of Gendawana Rock close to the Ambalangoda Fisheries Port has by now reached the attention of the foreign media. For this very reason, the university where she had been studying had issued a statement about the
threats faced in relation to the safety of foreign students sent for academic assignments in Sri Lanka and had instructed that all students return to Australia.
The Australian student who was subjected to rape had arrived in Sri Lanka in order to collect data for a dissertation pertaining to turtle conservation. It was during this period of time that a group of comrades and a group of young people had gone to enjoy that day to Gendawana Rock. It is learnt that the crowd had got together and had enjoyed a bout of beer. The tour-guide who came to direct her the way, an 18 year old boy had accompanied her to a spot closeby to Gendawana Rock and had forcibly made her undress, after which she had been sexually molested. it is recorded in her complaint that she was not in a position to seek the aid of anyone because she was in an intoxicated state and not in her proper senses.
Though the police are conducting investigations according to the complaint, searching for the 18 year old young man against whom the complaint has been lodged, so far it had not been possible to take him into custody.
A medical report too has been obtained after the foreign young girl was presented to the Balapitiya JMO.
This incident has been flashed across a number of foreign media including the Morning Herald newspaper of Sydney, Australia.
The victim has been here from last December to conduct a voluntary academic project on turtle conservation. Though this 20 year old young girl was under the care of the tour guide, the university to which she was attached had seriously considered the manner in which the safety of the students are at risk and for that same reason they have taken steps to curtail all tours and call the students back.
