Student who jumped from 5th floor had mental illness
New sources of information has been revealed by now about the death of Sashipaba Randima Gunawardena the First Year student of the Science Faculty of the University of Colombo who jumped to her death from the 5th floor. The latest revelation is that the deceased student has been taking treatment before from the District Medical Officer of Lunugamvehera for mental illness.
Priyantha Sri Pushpakumara, Officer in charge of Disciplinary activities in the University of Colombo giving evidence at the courts of the inquest into Sudden Deaths said that this information was revealed not from the parents of the deceased student, but from a speech made by the District Medical Officer of Lunugamvehera on the occasion of the funeral. The President of the Student Council, Pasan had informed the Officer in Charge of Disciplinary activities about that speech. He had in that speech mentioned that this student had taken treatment from him for a mental illness that she had been suffering from and that he had given advice to her parents not to keep her isolated.
Addl. Coroner of the Colombo Municipality inquiring into Sudden Deaths returned an open verdict on the death informed the District Medical Officer of Lunugamvehera to present himself to give evidence on July 18th and the President of the Student Council who conveyed the information to appear on July 11th at the courts for inquest into Sudden Deaths, Colombo.
It is now a matter of suspicion whether the reason for divulging information about this mental illness was not disclosed by the family of the deceased student and her relatives at the inquiry for evidence conducted in relation to the death was something done on purpose.
Further inquiries are being conducted.
